The most basic stitch, used to start working rows of crochet, also known as the 'foundation chain' and to make open spaces or loops.

An open space left by making a chain or several chains in a piece of crochet.


1.  Wrap the yarn over your hook.
2.  Pull this wrapped yarn through the loop (or slip knot) already on your hook.

3.  The chain stitch is complete.
